在競爭激烈的經營環境中，公司要維持競爭優勢必須持續升級，大型化與全球化是兩個可能的途徑，而購併（M&As）是最直接與快速的方法之一。

像是臺灣大哥大電信分別在2001年與2004年合併泛亞電訊與東信電信；聯想電腦於2005年購併IBM個人電腦部門，成為世界第三大個人電腦製造商；美國鋼鐵公司（US Steel）於1982年買下馬拉松石油公司（Marathon Oil）…等等。
