History And background about Chinese Yo-yo<\/a>~~<\/div>\n

One of the popular sports in China is playing with the
\nChinese yo-yo ( <\/span>\u6296\u7a7a\u7af9<\/span> d\u01d2uk\u014dngzhú or \u626f\u9234 <\/span>Ch\u011b líng<\/span>)<\/span>. The basic
\nyo-yo is shaped like two disks connected by an axle and is spun by a string
\nwound around its center and by pushing and pulling on the string by moving two
\nsticks.<\/span><\/div>\n

There are many names for the yo-yo, partly because it has
\nbeen around so long, and partly because it is very popular and has many
\nregional nicknames. It can also be called \u7a7a\u949f<\/span>
\n( k\u014dngzh\u014dng) or hollow bell. You can see that the single sided type looks like
\na bell, but the name could also come from the fact that when the yo-yo is spun
\nit makes a whistling sound.<\/p>\n

Two other names derive from the ability to make a sound.
\nXianghuang \u54cd\u7c27<\/span> (xi\u01cenghuáng) means
\n"make the sound of the woodwind" referring to the reed in certain
\ninstruments. Cheling \u626f\u94c3<\/span> (ch\u011blíng) means "pull
\nbell."<\/p>\n

When the yo-yo went to Europe with the traders after 17th
\ncentury, it got new names. Devil on two sticks must describe the difficulty of
\nlearning the skill. It became enormously popular among both adults and
\nchildren. It was introduced to the circus where jugglers developed elaborate
\ntricks and feats of skill.<\/p>\n

When, in 1906, Gustav Philippart patented significant design
\nchanges to the Chinese yo-yo, he called it a diabolo. His had open cups at
\neither end and was made of tire rubber. It would be incorrect to call the
\nkongzhu or Chinese yo-yo a diabolo, that name should apply to Philippart's
\ninvention, but many sources do refer to it as a diabolo. The diabolo's design
\nis significantly different, although it is still played with two sticks and a
\nstring. Interestingly, Philippart's version has also been adopted by the
