A Chinese\u00a0radical<\/b>\u00a0(Chinese<\/span><\/a>:\u00a0\u90e8\u9996;\u00a0pinyin<\/span><\/a>:\u00a0b\u00f9sh\u01d2u<\/i>; literally: “section header”) is a graphical component of a\u00a0Chinese character<\/span><\/a>\u00a0under which the character is traditionally listed in a Chinese dictionary. This component is often a\u00a0semantic indicator<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(that is, an indicator of the meaning of the character), though in some cases the original semantic connection has become obscure owing to changes in character meaning over time. In other cases the radical may be a\u00a0phonetic component<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or even an artificially extracted portion of the character. \u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n
