How To Say Dates and Weekdays in Mandarin

We will learn how ot say dates and weekdays in Mandarin in this article.

  • Year “nián”

In Mandarin, 4-digit numbers for year will be separate in pronouncing. For example, year 2016, we will pronounce “èr líng yī liù” and then add nián after the number.

  • Month “yuè”

Months are simple. Using the numbers 1-12 and add “yuè”, month after the numbers, it will be the month. E.g. January will be “yī yuè “; “shí yuè” for October and “shí èr yuè” for December.

  •  Dates “rì” or “hào”

By adding the numbers before “rì” or “hào”. You’ll be able to combine the desired dates. And rì and hào are interchangeable for dates.

E.g. 21st > “èr shí yī hào” or “èr shí yī rì “.

  • Weekdays

By adding the numbers before “xīng qí” or “lǐ bài”, it becomes the weekday. Again, “xīng qí” and “lǐ bài” are interchangeable. Note on Sunday, it will be “xīng qí tiān ” or “lǐ bài tiān”. Some people also say “xīng qí rì  ” or “lǐ bài rì ”

E.g. Monday is xīng qí yī; Friday is xīng qí wŭ or lǐ bài wŭ.

Jīntiān shì _____ nián_____yuè_____hào.

 

Q:今天是星期____/禮拜____？

Jīntiān shì xīngqí jǐ/lǐbài jǐ?

A: 今天是星期幾/禮拜幾？

Jīntiān shì xīngqí____/lǐbài____?

 

note:

  1. In Mandarin, bigger number (year) comes first, so the order will be year, month and date.
  2. jǐ is a question word asking for “numbers”.
