部首和部件 Radical and parts

We start to learn the characters’ radicals from lesson 4.   We should know that each Chinese character consists of radical 部首 (ㄅㄨˋㄕㄡˇ / bu4 shou3) and part(s) 部件 (ㄅㄨˋ ㄐㄧㄢˋ bu4 jian4) .

For example:  細    radical-糸        part-田          虎    radical-虍        part-ㄦ

Can you do the matching game to find the characters?

Radical and part

A Chinese radical (Chinese: 部首; pinyinbùshǒu; literally: “section header”) is a graphical component of a Chinese character under which the character is traditionally listed in a Chinese dictionary. This component is often a semantic indicator (that is, an indicator of the meaning of the character), though in some cases the original semantic connection has become obscure owing to changes in character meaning over time. In other cases the radical may be a phonetic component or even an artificially extracted portion of the character.

媽  In the Chinese character 媽  “mother”, the left part is the radical 女  “female”. In this case the radical is the semantic component of a phono-semantic compound, while the right part, 馬  “horse”, is the phonetic component.
