混齡併班的情況，大致上可分為兩種：
第一種：學生程度相仿，年齡不同。
這種班級的學生，因在認知與成熟度上有所差異，教師於備課上，會有難度。倘若，授課方式太過淺顯，遣詞用字過於簡易，年齡較大的學生可能會覺得課程無趣，缺乏學習動力；然而，反向操作，年紀較小的學生，所得成效可能會不如預期。
第二種：學生程度與年齡均不同。
針對這種班級，教材編排須有明顯的區分，尤其，當學生程度差異大時，隨堂練習是必要的，也就是說，當教師在教導程度較好的學生時，程度不及的學生，可在一旁先做預習、練習或複習(三者擇一)的動作，反之亦然。但是，這種班級，有時在秩序上不易管控，此完全仰賴學生的性格和學習態度而定，教師只能隨機應變。
以上兩種情況，非絕對性。而課堂上的活動與遊戲安排，也會因學生年齡差異和程度的不同，出現兩極化的反映。
